As a vocalist, I know what it feels like to strain for a note that’s just out of reach. You tighten your jaw, lift your shoulders, push from your throat—doing everything you can to force it. And sometimes, it works… but it’s never beautiful. It’s never sustainable. And if you do it long enough, it causes damage.

Same goes for the gym. When you push too hard, too fast—when you ignore your form just to beat the clock or hit a number—you don’t build strength. You build injury.
Strain always feels like effort. But not all effort is healthy.
Not all pressure produces growth.
Not all games are worth playing.
In the world of mental health, we strain too—
We strain to be liked.
To prove we’re enough.
To hold it all together.
To meet invisible expectations we didn’t agree to, but now feel chained to.
The problem is, we’re straining for things that are actually hurting us.
We’re playing games that were never meant to be played.
Who told us we had to be everything for everyone?
Who said success means no margin for rest?
Who convinced us that asking for help is failure?
At OC Mental Wellness, we work with people who are exhausted from straining. People who’ve overextended emotionally, relationally, even spiritually—only to find that the approval, peace, or worth they hoped to gain never shows up.
Strain is a red flag. It’s your body, your soul, your nervous system whispering:
“This isn’t sustainable.”
“This isn’t who you are.”
“This isn’t what you were made for.”
True health isn’t built through strain. It’s built through alignment—where your body, mind, and values move in sync. It’s built through freedom, where you stop performing and start healing. It’s built through honesty, where you admit what’s too heavy and find rest.
So here’s the question:
What are you straining for right now?
And is it giving you life—or stealing it?
If you’re tired of playing a game you didn’t sign up for, we’d love to walk with you. There’s a different way to live—and you don’t have to strain to reach it.
